Engineering Co-op & Internship Program
The Engineering Co-op & Internship Program (ECIP) uses the terms "cooperative education" and "internship" to refer to specific, paid employment arrangements. These opportunities are available through employers' formal and specially structured cooperative education and internship programs. The university and our employer partners provide students with a professional education that includes additional support, close supervision, meaningful work, performance feedback, and official documentation of work experience through enrollment in a University course called Engineering 689.
- Cooperative education requires that students alternate full-time work and full-time school for a minimum of two work quarters with the same employer. Students typically remain on campus their first and last years and pursue cooperative education for the intervening years. There is no upper limit on the number of times a student may return to a cooperative education position, and many employers find that a cooperative education program that involves more than two work quarters is an even better way to meet long term recruiting goals. After a cooperative education commitment is fulfilled, students may choose to pursue other cooperative education positions upon approval from the Director and notification to the employer. Cooperative education should be designed so that, as students progress through their coursework, their tasks increase in responsibility and challenge. In most cases, compensation increases with each return to work, reflecting both increased responsibility and productivity.
- Internships are one period commitments. The work period may last for one quarter or two consecutive quarters (3 or 6 month internships). Although summer internships are the most common, employers can hire interns for any quarter of the academic year.
Employers who need part-time technical employees can recruit students by posting positions on our online system.
Prior to recruiting Ohio State engineering co-op or internship candidates, employers are required to submit the Employer Agreement Form online or the Employer Agreement Form as a PDF. Familiarize yourself with the Engineering Co-op & Internship Program (ECIP) by reviewing the Co-op/Intern Employer Handbook [pdf]. (Documents require Adobe Reader [new window] or another PDF viewer).
