Permanent Resident (PR) of the US
Permanent residents are authorized to work in the US Students with PR status receive
a permanent resident card that provides evidence for the right to live and work in the
US permanently. A few Engineering Career Services (ECS) candidates have “pending
Permanent Resident status”. Ask the student for details.
Before graduation (co-ops, interns, and part-time employment)
Full-time students on F-1 or J-1 visas are typically permitted to work before graduation by using up to 12 months of Curricular Practical Training (CPT). When granted, CPT is permission to gain experience in a student’s field of study. This experience must be major-related, and can be either on or off-campus, and either part-time or full-time. Students must apply for permission to accept employment by submitting an offer letter and Work Assignment Form to the Engineering Co-op and Internship Program (ECIP). Once ECIP approves the job, the student must see an advisor at the Office of International Education (OIE) to complete the application process for CPT. OIE processes the work authorization paperwork for you.
After graduation
F-1 or J-1 visa holders are generally authorized to work up to 12 months after graduation by using Optional Practical Training (OPT) or academic training. When granted, OPT is permission to work within the field of study after graduation or the completion of studies and can be part-time or full-time work. Students should obtain the OPT paperwork from an OIE advisor while still on campus.
Options for longer-term employment after graduation
- H-1B or “Temporary Worker” Visa: if an employer wishes to retain an international graduate beyond the OPT or academic training period (described above), it is possible to obtain an H-1B or “Temporary Worker” Visa for up to six years. The employer applies for this visa.
- L visa: if a foreign national has worked abroad at a U.S. firm or corporation (or the affiliate/subsidiary of a US company) for at least one year, the U.S employer can apply for an L visa so that the foreign national can transfer to the US and work up to three years here.
INS Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9)
All new employees must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9). This form signifies that the employer verified identity and legal employment eligibility for each employee. Individuals who have applied for and received authorization to accept employment under practical or academic training will have documentation of current eligibility to submit to prospective employers.
