Calendar information
The Ohio State University is on the quarter system; therefore, recruiting starts later at Ohio State
than at most semester schools. Review calendar information before you make your plans to recruit at Engineering Career Services (ECS):
- ECS' calendar of important recruiting dates for general information on the upcoming year.
- ECS' windows/timetable for on-campus interviews gives recruiting date information specific to the current quarter.
- OSU's University calendar [new window] for basic date information for the current year and beyond.
Who are you interviewing?
Consider the type of candidates you're seeking when planning your recruiting visit:
- Graduating students—candidate pool is largest from October to March.
- Co-ops and interns— candidate pool is largest from November to May.
Plan ahead
Employers who reserve recruiting dates well in advance are most likely to get prime recruiting dates.
Special accommodations
Please let us know if you require disability-related accommodations for your on-campus interview visit.

Schedule types
Select from 3 types of interview schedules:
- Preselect (you invite candidates to schedule interviews after reviewing their resumes)
Students who match the qualifications you provide can submit their resumes for your consideration. You review candidates’ resumes online and decide whom to invite to interview and on which schedule they should be interviewed. Choose this type of schedule if you anticipate more candidates than available interview slots. This schedule type is also useful if you wish to consider qualifications (i.e. experience, activities) other than the screening criteria you selected. - Open (you’ll interview anyone who’s an exact match with your basic criteria)
You set specific qualifications and only those students who are an exact match will be able to sign up for an interview. You do not need to review resumes in advance since only qualified students can sign up. Students who are exact matches will be able to schedule interview times on a space-available basis. Choose this type of schedule if you’re open to interviewing anyone who meets your basic criteria or if you don’t have time to review resumes before the interview date. - Room Reservation Only (we provide the interview room only; you handle the scheduling)
Request a vacant interview room, with no associated schedule or automated sign-ups. You are responsible for contacting candidates to schedule interviews. Please bring an extra copy of your interview schedule to ECS on the interview date.
For more information about the different schedule types contact us at ecs@osu.edu or 614/292-6651.
Candidate types
On-campus recruiting focuses on 3 candidate types:
- Career employment candidates
BS, MS, and PhD students within 1 year before/after graduation, seeking opportunities for full-time, post-graduate employment. - Intern candidates
BS, MS, and PhD students, typically before graduation or between degrees, seeking 1 (or more) quarter of full-time, professional experience. - Co-op candidates
BS students at least one year before graduation seeking 2 or more quarters of full-time, professional experience.
Registered, non-registered & non-OSU students
Our candidate database consists of students registered with ECS who are currently actively
pursuing career, intern, or cooperative education employment opportunities. Over 80% of
BS-level, 65% of MS-level, and 35% of PhD-level engineering students register with ECS.
Of course, not all of them are seeking employment at any given time, and students must
reactivate every quarter to have an active ECS account.
Because our database is integrated with that of the University Registrar, you can be assured of the accuracy of key candidate criteria such as major, degree, GPA, and work authorization. This information is viewable in the thumbnail candidate profile, visible adjacent to the resume link. Furthermore, when you select criteria for either a preselect or open interview schedule, you can be assured that only those candidates who actually meet your criteria will be able to apply/schedule.
Who is eligible to register with ECS?
Students in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 overall GPA) who are actively pursuing
a degree from The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering. Students who
expect to graduate with a BS in Computer & Information Science through the College
of Math & Physical Sciences with a minimum GPA of 2.85 are also eligible to register.
All career employment candidates, including transfer students and new MS/PhD students,
must have completed two full-time quarters at Ohio State to register with ECS. Co-op
and intern candidates must have three full-time quarters completed (two for Honors students)
and at least a “C” in the first required math class. They must also meet with
an advisor and attend registration and interview workshops.
Can I interview a student who is not registered?
Yes. We suggest using one of these methods to interview a student who cannot register with ECS:
- Request an “employer generated” blank interview slot throught the scheduling coordinator and personally contact the student to schedule him/her.
- Arrange to meet with her/him over lunch or during a break in your schedule (view a list of area restaurants).
Please encourage all eligible students to register or reactivate so that you can enjoy the convenience of the online system.
What does it mean for a student to have an active account?
The student with an active account has:
- Met the minimum requirements to register
- Paid $25 to set up an online account
- Provided written legal permission for ECS to reveal relevant information to employers
- Completed his/her candidate profile
- Specified the type of job currently sought
- Uploaded his/her resume(s)
- Submitted an online activation form
Students must reactivate every quarter to be included in our candidate database and schedule interviews. Sometimes they forget. Please encourage all candidates to activate their accounts.
Transcripts, applications, company information
If you require student transcripts (official or unofficial) or completed applications
(either online or paper copy) before interviews, please include those instructions in
the text of the job/company information you provide to us. Students will see these
instructions when they view the details of your upcoming visit.
Employers who require an official transcript often offer to pay the processing fee. The easiest way to do this is to ask students to sign a transcript release form (available from ECS), since by Federal law, students’ signatures are required for the release of their academic records.
Students tend to conduct pre-interview research electronically. Therefore, your company profile and website should be included when you submit your job information. If you send applications or recruiting information to our office, you may wish to contact students on your schedule and let them know you have done so, since they won’t otherwise look for it. Alternatively, you can distribute materials at your information session and/or interviews.
