Making Your Resume Work for You

    • Use sample text to brainstorm content
    • Change headings / sequence as needed to reflect YOU.
    • Maintain formatting for compatibility with employer software
    • Avoid old templates found in MS Word software
    • Incorporate KEY WORDS

  • Review w/ ECS staff member  to avoid “resume black holes”
  • Name it LastnameFirstname-res.doc
  • Default: used in referrals by ECS,
  • See Planning Job Choices for more suggestions
7
Your resume should promote YOU
8
On-campus Interview Types
  • Pre-selected:  employers review resumes 1st
  • First, you can apply if your account is unblocked and you match the employer’s criteria. Submit your resume for consideration via “jobs” section of ECS Job Board
  • Next, when the scheduling window opens, check status in “interviews” section (invited or alternate) and sign up for an interview time
    CAUTION: Don’t wait until the final deadline!
  • Invited candidates have 1—2 days priority scheduling,
  •   then alternates can schedule. FCFS!

  • Open: Anyone who matches the employer’s criteria can schedule interview times. Caution: FCFS!

9
What if you don’t match?
  • You can apply for a “qualifications override”
  • Apply early in the application window (3 days notice minimum)
  • Reasons for overrides:
    •  overall GPA is under employer’s stated minimum, but major GPA exceeds the minimum;
    •  both major and overall GPA are under the minimum but very close (ie, 2.98 for a 3.0 minimum);
    •  GPA is under the minimum, but the student has strong relevant experience;
    • student’s major or degree level is not listed, but should be (RH will verify/investigate—this is not an instantaneous process);
    • University error:  for example, the student’s degree level or other key field was not  yet entered by the student’s advisor, effectively blocking him or her from all interviews.
    • Overrides are never approved for work authorization discrepancies.
    • Overrides are NOT automatic – some employers object
