A note on collecting & reporting on career outcomes data
Nature & size of sample
ECS endeavors to collect data on all graduates, not just those who register with the office or those who respond to a follow-up survey. Typically, we obtain information on approximately 90% of the graduating bachelor’s degree students.
Survey methods
The methods we use include:
- Web-based survey form
- Input from faculty/staff
- Employer reports
- Personal inquiries (at commencement rehearsal and via telephone follow-up)
Timing of the survey
Since we are primarily interested in students’ plans at graduation, we do not wait to conduct our survey 6—12 months after graduation. For each of the four annual commencements, we survey the graduating class several times prior to commencement, at commencement rehearsal, and again within three months after commencement.
Our definition of employed
We report separately on those who notify us about:
- Accepting employment
- Contemplating offers
- Seeking employment
- Further education plans
- Other plans (such as returning to home country)
We define “employment” as major- or degree-related employment or military careers.
